How You Meet / How You Can Meet Your Need for Certainty

Smoking helps you meet your need for certainty destructively because it’s always available, and its repetitive movement gives the illusion of stability. In what other ways are you currently meeting your need for certainty?

You can meet your needs through a belief, an activity, a relationship, or a job.

Below are some questions & examples to help you identify how you currently meet your need for certainty.

*Which of your basic needs are being met?

(Food, housing, clothing)

*Which relationships give you comfort and security in your life right now?

(This does not mean that a relationship has to always make you feel good, but that the existence of that relationship makes you feel more secure in the world)

*What habits, hobbies, actions, or activities provide a feeling of certainty? What habits, hobbies, actions, or activities do you feel certain will give you joy and comfort?

(A habit of practicing gratitude, calling a loved one, being held, covering yourself with a blanket, cooking, driving, gardening, finishing, organizing, planning)

*What beliefs give you a feeling of certainty?

(The sun will rise every day, religious or spiritual beliefs)

* Which unhelpful habits or vices do you have in your life that give you comfort or a false sense of security?

(smoking, alcohol, overeating, binge eating, trying to control everything, hoarding)
