You don’t have to avoid your triggers while going through the program or after you stop smoking. (You can’t avoid your triggers forever, right?)
On the contrary, if a trigger is causing you to smoke, it’s best to be exposed to it while you’re on the program so you can learn new ways to respond to it.
Should I stop drinking coffee?
You don’t have to quit coffee just because it’s a smoking trigger. By going through the program, you will learn how to change your response to your triggers so you can enjoy your coffee as a non-smoker, as many of our members do!
However, if you wish to quit drinking coffee anyway, it’s best to do so after you finish the program so you can tackle one thing at a time.
Keep in mind that nicotine helps metabolize caffeine, so when you reduce your nicotine intake and eventually stop, you’ll need to reduce your caffeine as well. Because as a nonsmoker, you need less caffeine to experience the same alertness you experienced when you were a smoker.
Do I have to stop socializing or drinking alcohol while on the program?
You don’t need to avoid socializing while on the program or after quitting smoking. By going through the program, you will learn how to change your response to your triggers so you can enjoy social situations and alcohol as a non-smoker. (We talk about social situations and alcohol on Day 12 of the program.)
This applies to all triggers.
Smoking triggers are addressed on days 5, 7, and 10 of the program.
